The Hubert H. Humphrey North-South fellowship is one the most prestigious programs offered by the U.S. government. The fellowship Provides Opportunities in the United States for academic study and professional development at selected institutions to mid-career professionals from developing countries around the world. The Humphrey Program awards fellowships on competitive basis in different fields. United States Information Service (USIS) posts, Fulbright Commissions and binational centers nominate candidates. The Institute of International Education (IIE), based in New York, reviews nominations with the assistance of independent selection committees and makes recommendations to the presidentially - appointed Board of Foreign Scholarships, Which approves final selections and awards fellowships.

The Humphrey fellowship is extremely competitive. In 1996, 2200 applicants competed for fellowships in a world wide competition. 325 nominations were sent to the IIE for final consideration and 117 fellows were selected finally.

I was one the three fellows selected from Pakistan. I was awarded fellowship in the field of human resource management and public administration and was placed at the American University, Washington D.C.

I undertook a comprehensive program at the A.U. that combined academic and professional development activities directly related to my individual needs and fields of interest. Throughout the year, I participated in number of workshops and conferences which provided unique opportunity to interact with leaders from federal, state, and local governments, multi-lateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
